Wednesday January 20, 2021 was the inauguration of the 46th president of the United States Joseph R. Biden Jr. as well as the first ever woman, African American and Asian American Vice President Kamala Harris. It was truly a historic event and really felt like the dawning of a new era. During the ceremony I could not help but feel a sense of pride from my hometown Baton Rouge’s influence. This celebration was dripping in black excellence. The baddest band in the land Southern Universities human jukebox!

Christopher John Rogers a Baton Rouge high graduate designed the purple outfit that Kamal Harris was wearing. Rogers was the 2020 recipient of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s American Emerging Designer of the Year Award.

The show stealer was 22 year old Los Angeles native poet Amanda Gorman. She recited her work that she created just for this event entitled “The Hill We Climb.”  This was definitely what the country needed to hear at this time. Words matter.
